IB Chemistry at Blue Valley

First of all welcome to the IB Chemistry class.

Blue Valley School offers Standard and Higher Level Chemistry.

Both levels require an Internal Assessment Component (Laboratory Practices and Group 4 Project) and an  External Assessment (3 Papers)

 Internal Assessment 24%

Your practical work is assessed continually throughout the two years of the course. The assessment is exactly the same for both SL and HL. It is assessed according to five different criteria:

  • Design
  • Data Collection and Processing
  • Conclusion and Evaluation
  • Manipulative Skills
  • Personal Skills

Each criterion carries a maximum of six marks to give a total maximum mark of 48. Some work may not be formally assessed at all and some may only be assessed for one or two of the criteria.

However your teacher must assess each of the three first criteria at least twice during the two years and only once the last two. Most teachers will assess more than this. Your final mark will be the average of the two assessments chosen by your teacher to represent each criterion and should reflect the standard you have reached by the end of the course.

Each criterion is broken down into three different aspects. Your teacher assesses whether you have covered each aspect completely/2, partially/1, or not at all/0 to arrive at the mark given for each criterion. The school will send your work for IBO moderation so that everyone is graded uniformly.

External Assessment 76%

According to the IBO Chemistry Subject Guide, the external assessment consists of three written papers.
The papers test knowledge of the core only for students at SL and the core and Additional Higher Level (AHL) material for students at HL. No marks are deducted for incorrect responses.

  • Paper 1
  • Paper 2
  • Paper 3
